When it comes to culinary treasures, OMI is a hidden gem that shines brightly in the world of gourmet dining. This unassuming restaurant, tucked away in the heart of Melbourne, has earned its reputation as the go-to destination for those seeking the pinnacle of Wagyu perfection. OMI has, for years, tantalized taste buds with premium Wagyu rice bowls at an affordable price, and our recent dining experience there was nothing short of exceptional.
A Cut Above the Rest
OMI’s commitment to quality is evident from the very source of their star ingredient – Wagyu beef. The restaurant meticulously sources its Wagyu from the finest local suppliers across Australia, ensuring that every bite is a testament to the country’s rich agricultural heritage. It’s no surprise that OMI has been honored with multiple awards, including the prestigious Best Japanese Restaurant in 2020 by The Age, the Australian Good Food Guide, and the Australian Enterprise Award in 2023. This acclaim is not unfounded; it’s a testament to their unwavering dedication to culinary excellence.
A Culinary Journey Worth Noting
As we entered OMI, we were met with an understated yet inviting ambiance. The minimalist decor served to focus our attention on the star of the show – the food. The menu boasts an array of tempting options, but the mains truly steal the spotlight. The decision-making process was made even more delightful with a wide selection of sauces, including Truffle Mayo, Salted Egg, Black Truffle, Mentaiko, Signature Teriyaki, Spicy Mayo, Sambal, Black Pepper, and Singapore Chilli Crab Sauce.
Our choices included the Soft Shell Crab with Rice and Salted Egg Sauce, a masterpiece of flavors, and the Ultimate Wagyu with Rice and Truffle Mayo Sauce, which was nothing short of heavenly. Each dish was a harmony of textures and tastes, and the Wagyu beef melted in our mouths like butter.

Sides to Savor
To complement the mains, we couldn’t resist trying the Salted Egg Fries, which were shoestring fries served with an indulgent salted egg sauce. The contrasting textures of crispy fries and creamy sauce made for a delightful pairing. The Grilled Japanese Unagi with Black Truffle Sauce was a culinary adventure in itself, showcasing the chef’s expertise in handling delicate flavors and ingredients.

Beverages that Delight
No meal is complete without a good beverage.
We opted for the Geisha Genmaicha in a pot, a fragrant and delicate green tea that perfectly complemented the rich flavors of our mains.
The Calpis Mango provided a refreshing contrast, with its sweet and tangy notes.

Sweet Farewell
And what’s a visit to OMI without indulging in some mouthwatering desserts? The Original Basque Burnt Cheese Cake with Premium Matcha Kyoto Ice Cream was a sweet conclusion to our dining experience. Its creamy, slightly caramelized top gave way to a velvety interior, and when paired with the green tea ice cream, it was a taste of pure delight. For a twist on the classic, we also savored the Matcha Burnt Cheese Cake with Premium Matcha Kyoto Ice Cream, which highlighted the delicate notes of matcha in every bite.

OMI is more than just a restaurant; it’s an ode to the finest Australian Wagyu beef and a testament to the culinary mastery of the chefs who transform these premium ingredients into art. With accolades from prestigious publications and a loyal following, it’s clear that OMI is a treasure trove for food enthusiasts. The restaurant’s emphasis on affordability makes it accessible to everyone, ensuring that you don’t have to break the bank to savor the finest Wagyu in Australia.
