Kantin Asam Pedas — A Taste of Johor & Melaka in Ukay Perdana

Tucked away in Ukay Perdana, Kantin Asam Pedas has built a following for its comforting, home-style take on one of Malaysia’s most beloved dishes — asam pedas.

The restaurant is known for bringing together the flavours of Johor and Melaka-style asam pedas, with a selection ranging from fish and seafood to meat, alongside familiar kampung-style accompaniments. Its Telur Ikan Mayong has also been highlighted by diners as one of its signature offerings, while its freshly made cekodok pisang has earned plenty of love as a teatime treat.

There is something particularly inviting about the way the food is served here — generous, homestyle and made for enjoying with plenty of steamed rice and traditional sides.

The Asam Pedas Selection

The meal began, naturally, with the star of the show: Asam Pedas. What makes the experience interesting is being able to sample different ingredients with the same distinctive Johor–Melaka-inspired character.

Asam Pedas Tetel
The tetel is wonderfully tender, with the rich, gelatinous texture of the beef adding an extra layer of richness to the tangy and aromatic gravy. Paired with rice, it makes for an especially comforting bowl of asam pedas.

Asam Pedas Telur Mayong
A must-try for those who enjoy something a little different. The telur mayong has a wonderfully soft and delicate texture, while the fragrant asam pedas gravy gives it plenty of character. It is easy to understand why this is one of the dishes associated with the restaurant.

Asam Pedas Ikan Pari
The stingray works beautifully with asam pedas. Its firm, slightly springy flesh absorbs the flavours of the gravy well, making every bite satisfyingly aromatic and tangy.

Asam Pedas Ikan Jenahak
The jenahak offers a lovely balance of tender fish and the robust asam pedas gravy. It is a great choice for those who prefer a meaty fish that can stand up nicely to the bold flavours of the sauce.

Asam Pedas Ikan Tenggiri
The tenggiri is another standout, with firm, flaky flesh that pairs naturally with the fragrant gravy. It delivers that familiar comforting taste of a good plate of kampung-style asam pedas.

The restaurant’s different asam pedas preparations are also something worth exploring — previous diners have specifically praised the fragrant, flavourful gravy and the fact that the restaurant offers different ingredients across its menu.

Kampung-Style Sides

No plate of asam pedas feels quite complete without the accompanying traditional sides, and the Ulam, Ikan Masin & Telur Rebus bring exactly that nostalgic kampung touch.

The fresh ulam adds a refreshing contrast to the richness of the main dishes, while the ikan masin provides that savoury, salty kick that makes you reach for another spoonful of rice. Together, they make the meal feel wonderfully complete.

Then there is the Ayam Goreng — golden on the outside, juicy and tender inside, with a satisfying savoury seasoning. It is the kind of familiar fried chicken that disappears rather quickly once it hits the table.

The Ikan Bawal Goreng is equally enjoyable, with nicely fried skin and tender fish underneath. Simple, comforting and very well suited to be eaten alongside rice, ulam and the other dishes.

Don’t Skip Dessert

To finish, the Cekodok Pisang makes for a delightful sweet ending. Freshly made and pleasantly fluffy inside, with a lovely crisp exterior, it has the kind of homemade quality that makes it particularly addictive. Previous diners have also singled out the restaurant’s cekodok for its freshly fried, crisp-yet-soft texture.

The Kuih Bom Bijian, available in kacang hijau and kelapa flavours, adds another nostalgic Malaysian touch. The crisp sesame-coated exterior gives way to a sweet, fragrant filling — a lovely little treat to end the meal.

A Comforting Taste of Malaysian Heritage

What I enjoyed most about Kantin Adam Pedas is that the experience goes beyond simply having a bowl of asam pedas. It is a celebration of familiar Malaysian flavours — tangy, spicy, savoury, aromatic and comforting, accompanied by the traditional sides that make a meal feel like one prepared at home.

With its generous selection of asam pedas, kampung-style dishes and nostalgic kuih, Kantin Adam Pedas is a satisfying destination for anyone who appreciates the distinctive flavours of Johor and Melaka-style cooking.

If you are an asam pedas enthusiast, this is definitely one to put on your list when you’re in Ukay Perdana.
