A Celebration of Malaysian Heritage on a Plate: “Makan Makan Malaysia: Chapter 1” by Oriental Group

In a country where food is deeply woven into identity, memory, and culture, Oriental Group of Restaurants has masterfully captured the spirit of Malaysia’s culinary diversity with its latest showcase, “Makan Makan Malaysia: Chapter 1.” This thoughtfully curated dining experience is more than just a meal—it is a journey across the nation’s rich gastronomic landscape, interpreted through the refined lens of the Group’s Master Chefs.

Drawing inspiration from legendary dishes and prized local ingredients, the menu pays tribute to Malaysia’s vibrant food heritage. Every course tells a story—of regions, traditions, and the harmonious blending of cultures that have shaped Malaysian cuisine over generations.

The experience begins with an exceptional quartet of appetisers, each offering a distinct introduction to Peninsula Malaysia’s flavours. The Iberico Pork Neck Satay is a standout—beautifully charred, tender, and paired with a rich, nutty Kajang-style satay sauce that elevates the premium cut to indulgent heights. Equally impressive is the Crispy Muar Seafood Otak-Otak Roll, where the fragrant, spiced seafood filling is wrapped in a delicately crisp exterior, delivering both texture and aroma in every bite.

The Fire-Roasted Cameron Highlands Sweet Corn celebrates simplicity at its finest. Naturally sweet and lightly caramelised, it highlights the pristine quality of highland produce. Meanwhile, the Forest Picked Paku Pakis Salad offers a refreshing contrast—its tender crunch enhanced by a traditional dressing and accented with crispy cuttlefish, creating a delightful interplay of flavours and textures.

The main courses are where the menu truly shines, showcasing heritage dishes with depth, finesse, and remarkable execution. The Double-Boiled Sarawak White Pepper Sharkfin Soup is a comforting masterpiece. Slow-simmered for eight hours, the broth is deeply flavourful, with the distinctive warmth of Sarawak white pepper perfectly balanced by the sweetness of Cameron Highlands white radish.

Seafood lovers will be captivated by the Tanjung Tualang Freshwater Prawns, sourced directly from Perak’s rivers. Lightly pan-fried to preserve their natural sweetness, they are enhanced with a delicate soy-based sauce that brings out their full, succulent character.

The Steamed Pantai Remis Pomfret, Qilin Style is equally refined—the fish is silky, sweet, and impeccably steamed, while the crispy fried bones add a satisfying textural contrast.

A true showstopper is the Signature Nanyang Curry Roasted Suckling Pig. Infused with over 20 spices, the subtle curry aroma permeates the tender meat, while the skin achieves an extraordinary crispness. It is a bold yet harmonious reinterpretation of a classic, showcasing both technical mastery and creative flair.

The Local Organic Free-Range Chicken with Ipoh Bean Sprouts & Melaka Rice Balls offers a nostalgic return to one of Malaysia’s most beloved comfort dishes. The chicken is tender and flavourful, the bean sprouts crisp and refreshing, and the hand-shaped rice balls evoke the authenticity of Melaka’s culinary traditions—simple, honest, and deeply satisfying.

Dessert provides a graceful finale. Happiness Forever is as poetic as its name suggests—a delicate creation with layers of sago, purple sweet potato, and gula melaka coconut filling. Its refined sweetness and soft textures make it both elegant and memorable. The Musang King Durian Pudding is a fitting tribute to Malaysia’s king of fruits—rich, creamy, and luxuriously smooth, it melts effortlessly on the palate, leaving a lingering indulgence.

Priced at RM2,600++ per table for 10 persons (with a pork-free version available at Ruyi for RM2,300++), “Makan Makan Malaysia: Chapter 1” is a premium yet worthwhile culinary experience. Presented across selected Oriental Group venues from 17 to 28 August 2026, it invites diners to rediscover Malaysia’s flavours in a setting that blends tradition with sophistication.

More than just a meal, this showcase is a heartfelt celebration of food, culture, and shared memories—perfectly timed with Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Oriental Group has not only honoured the nation’s culinary heritage but elevated it into an unforgettable dining experience that resonates long after the last bite.
