Sony Expands Imaging Ecosystem with New Alpha 7R VI, FE 100-400mm G Master Lens and “Nature in Focus” Contest in Malaysia

New flagship camera, super-telephoto lens and nationwide photography initiative highlight Sony’s push to empower creators from grassroots to global stage

Sony Malaysia has unveiled a major expansion of its imaging ecosystem with the launch of the new Sony Alpha 7R VI, the Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS, alongside the introduction of its nationwide “Nature in Focus” photography contest aimed at nurturing Malaysia’s creative community.

The announcements reinforce Sony’s continued focus on professional creators, photographers and videographers by combining next-generation imaging hardware with community-driven initiatives designed to elevate local talent onto international platforms such as the Sony World Photography Awards.

Alpha 7R VI focuses on speed, resolution and AI-powered performance

At the centre of the launch is the Alpha 7R VI, the sixth generation of Sony’s high-resolution Alpha 7R series. The new mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera features an approximately 66.8-megapixel full-frame back-illuminated fully-stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with Sony’s latest BIONZ XR2 processing engine.

Sony said the combination delivers enhanced detail reproduction, improved colour accuracy and faster overall performance for a wide range of shooting scenarios, from wildlife and sports photography to landscape and portrait work.

The Alpha 7R VI is capable of blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second with AF/AE tracking, supported by a sensor readout speed approximately 5.6 times faster than its predecessor. The camera also incorporates Sony’s Real-time Recognition AF+ system with skeletal-based human pose estimation technology for more precise subject tracking in fast-moving environments.

For professional creators, the camera introduces several upgrades including a new NP-SA100 high-capacity battery, a 9.44-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder with HDR support, dual USB-C ports, and improved thermal management capable of supporting uninterrupted 8K video recording for up to 120 minutes.

Video creators will also benefit from features such as 8K 30p recording with oversampling, uncropped 4K recording at up to 120p, and Sony’s first-ever Dual Gain Shooting technology in the Alpha series, designed to reduce noise while preserving shadow detail.

Sony simultaneously introduced the Sony XLR-A4, a professional XLR adaptor designed to expand audio recording capabilities for filmmakers and content creators. The adaptor supports up to four-channel digital audio recording and 32-bit float recording when paired with compatible cameras, reducing the need for manual gain adjustments during shoots.

New G Master telephoto lens targets wildlife and sports creators

Sony also expanded its G Master lens lineup with the launch of the FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS super-telephoto zoom lens. Designed for wildlife, birding, sports and photojournalism applications, the lens delivers a constant F4.5 aperture throughout its 100-400mm zoom range while maintaining relatively lightweight portability at approximately 1.84kg.

Sony said the new lens achieves autofocus speeds up to three times faster than the previous FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS model, aided by four XD Linear Motors and updated autofocus algorithms. The lens is also compatible with Sony’s Alpha 9 III continuous shooting system at up to 120fps with AF/AE tracking.

Additional features include an internal zoom mechanism for better balance, Nano AR Coating II for flare reduction, built-in image stabilization, and compatibility with Sony teleconverters extending focal lengths up to 800mm, or 1,200mm in APS-C mode.

“Nature in Focus” contest aims to nurture next generation of Malaysian creators

Alongside the hardware launches, Sony Malaysia announced its “Nature in Focus” Photography Contest, which runs from 27 April to 31 July 2026. Open to Malaysian residents, the contest features Wildlife, Macro and Landscape categories and is structured into two participation segments: one for images captured using Sony cameras and another open category accepting entries from any camera system.

Sony said the initiative reflects its commitment to building a more inclusive photography community while encouraging local creators to develop portfolios that could eventually compete on international stages.

Participants stand a chance to win Sony imaging products including lenses and accessories.

The company also highlighted its broader efforts to support Malaysia’s creator ecosystem through workshops, masterclasses and educational collaborations with institutions such as Sunway University. These initiatives include internships, industry workshops and student engagement programmes aimed at bridging academic learning with professional creative industry practices.

Availability in Malaysia

In Malaysia, the Alpha 7R VI and XLR-A4 adaptor will be available from June 2026 at recommended retail prices of RM18,999 and RM2,599 respectively. The FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS lens will be available from May 2026 at RM17,999.
